"I wanted to start the series with triage as the first performance etched itself into me from the very beginning. As the groups music has developed I've been there through the entire journey. The progress that comes with every album and performance cements them into what I would confidently call a seminal band.
I met the whole band mostly at gigs and the house parties they'd have after at Emily's flat in Old Street. We'd talk as friends, the whole thing felt organic and over time these people have become recurring features in my life, both musically and personally.
Recorded at Stereolab's Andy Ramsey's studio in Bermondsey, every song in their self-released Fox Hours stands alone in telling a raw, unfiltered message that can only be understood as a whole. It's the first thing I saw them playing out and forever since has made me a lifelong fan."

「この連載の最初にTRIAGEを取り上げたかった。はじめて彼らのライブを観た瞬間から、その存在は強く心に刻まれていたからだ。
バンドの音楽が変化していく過程を、僕は最初からずっと見てきた。作品を重ね、ライブを重ねるごとに確実に進化していく姿を見ていると、彼らは間違いなく時代を代表する重要なバンドだと胸を張って言える。
メンバーとはライブハウスや、Old StreetにあるEmilyのフラットで開かれるハウスパーティーで自然と知り合った。友人として話し、時間を共にするうちに、その関係はごく自然なものになっていった。今では音楽的にも、人としても、僕の人生に欠かせない存在になっている。
StereolabのAndy Ramseyのスタジオ（Bermondsey）でレコーディングされた自主制作EP『Fox Hours』は、それぞれの楽曲が生々しく飾らないメッセージをもちながらも、全曲を通してはじめてひとつの作品として完成する。僕がはじめて彼らのライブで聴いたのもこの作品で、それ以来ずっと彼らのファンであり続けている」。

What was it like recording your first EP?

Emily We did four songs in a day and a half.

Salem With Fox Hours we recorded each track individually but with the newer albums we do it all live.

Dave Most of the demos were made without drums. I'd play around and try things out in rehearsals. It was kind of spontaneous.

Siam Maybe the element of impulse that went into it and just getting those tracks done as early as they were was a really good thing. We perform those tracks quite differently now and would have gone at it from a different point of view if we had been prepared.

初めてのEPをレコーディングした時のことを教えてください。

Emily 4曲を1日半で録ったんです。

Salem 『Fox Hours』では曲ごとに個別で録音していたんだけど、最近の作品は全部ライブ録音でやってる。

Dave デモのほとんどにはドラムが入っていなかったんだ。リハーサルでいろいろ試しながら形にしていった感じで、かなり自然発生的だったね。

Siam その衝動的な要素があったこと、それにあのタイミングで曲を完成させたことは、結果的にすごく良かったと思う。今はあの曲たちも全然違う演奏になっているし、もし当時もっと準備ができていたら、まったく違うアプローチになっていたはずだから。

First gig?

Emily We got asked to play a live show at Misery Loves (August 2023) we'd only been in a band a little bit before that.

Emily The first show felt like jumping off a cliff
and then realising that the water is fine.

はじめてのライブは？

Emily Misery Loves（2023年8月）から出演のオファーをもらったんです。バンドを組んでまだほんの少ししか経っていない頃でした。

Emily 最初のライブは、崖から飛び降りて「なんだ、水はちゃんとあるじゃん」って気づくような感覚だった。

How have things changed since?

Salem With the new stuff we've been working on, we rehearse together quite a lot, doing a lot of jams that we record through our phones. We make a folder and be like some of these are really fire.

Dave Yeah, a lot of our new stuff comes from those jams, us all playing in a room and then developing it together.

Orazio The more we play together, the more the process becomes more organic and democratic in a way. I think we all know what we fuck with musically now.

それから何が変わりましたか？

Salem 今つくっている新曲は、みんなでかなりリハーサルを重ねている。セッションをスマホで録音して、それをフォルダにまとめながら、「これ、めちゃくちゃヤバいじゃん」って盛り上がることも多い。

Dave 新曲の多くはそのジャムセッションから生まれてる。みんなでひとつの部屋で演奏して、それを一緒に発展させていくんだ。

Orazio 一緒に演奏する時間が長くなるほど、制作のプロセスもより自然で、民主的になってきたと思う。今はお互いが何にグッとくるのか、みんな分かっているからね。

Do you change it up when you play live?

Salem Yeah we slow things down, speed things up.

Orazio I try to change things up every gig, and I feel like everyone does to some extent, just because it's more fun really.

ライブでは曲を変えたりしますか？

Salem もちろん。テンポを落としたり、逆に速くしたりするよ。

Orazio 毎回少しずつ変えるようにしてる。たぶんみんなそうだと思う。それに、その方が単純に楽しいから。

What's TRIAGE to you?

Siam It's kind of what we all wanna hear, a combination of our influences and the things that we like.

Salem Its the thing that keeps me going

Emily Yeah same. I think it's a coming together of our emotions. I think everyone is really true to themselves in writing and playing how they feel, and act on intuition. The band's an outlet I'm really grateful for.

Salem It's the thing that brings me the most joy

Orazio Nooo (smirks)

Salem It's the best, I love our band, I love these guys so much

あなたにとってTRIAGEとは？

Siam 僕たち全員が「こんな音楽を聴きたい」と思うものかな。それぞれのルーツや好きなものが混ざり合った存在。

Salem 自分を前に進ませてくれるもの。

Emily 私も同じ。私にとっては、みんなの感情表現がひとつになる場所。ここでは、お互い自由に感情を表現できるし、それぞれが自分自身に正直でいられる。曲を書くことも、演奏することも、全部直感を信じている。このバンドは、私にとって本当に大切な居場所なんです。

Salem 人生で一番の喜びだよ。

Orazio （笑いながら）おいおい。

Salem でも本当に最高なんだ。このバンドも、このメンバーも大好きだよ。

Why TRIAGE?

Emily I think it's nice, the meaning. With the word Triage, there's two ways it's commonly used which is in a medical context of ordering things by level of severity, and also in a general context of it meaning to sort and prioritise.

Is kinda like life I guess.

It's a bit funny, the recent album was actually released in the Triage area of a hospital after I dislocated my shoulder. True to the name.

なぜ「TRIAGE」という名前なんですか？

Emily 意味が気に入っているんです。"Triage"という言葉には、一般的に2つの使われ方があります。ひとつは病院で、患者を重症度によって優先順位をつける「トリアージ」。もうひとつは、もっと広い意味で「整理する」「選別する」という意味。人生って、そういうものでもあるのかなって思っていて。ちょっと面白い話なんですが、実は最新アルバムは、私が肩を脱臼して入院した病院のトリアージエリアでリリースされたんです。まさに名前通りですよね。
