Although 〈Godard Haberdashery〉 is located in the Omotesando area of Shibuya, the heart of Tokyo's fashion district, it is in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but it is visited daily by many customers of all ages and genders. The owner, Sasako, used to work as a buyer for DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA. He was on the cutting edge of fashion, but when he felt a sense of discomfort with the consumption cycle, he decided to start his own business. He has always loved tailoring and feels that tailoring, which is the foundation of men's clothing, is what a store should be today, and in 2019, he opened a store in Yoyogi. The following year, in 2020, he moved and opened a concept store based on tailoring.
Jean-Luc Godard, after whom the shop is named. In his works, he created a new cinema by editing unrelated images and music in parallel or in collision. 〈Godard Haberdashery〉 is a unique clothing store that aims to do the same thing by cutting and editing tailoring and fashion, which are considered to be two different things, into equal proportions. The store is filled with original pieces commissioned from manufacturers and tailors in Europe, but instead of simply creating a space where each piece fits together, the store is designed so that even the occasional discomfort or incongruity can be a chance to find comfort and something to catch the eye. “It's a sense of a lot of different elements coming together. This quoting and editing is part of the creation of Godard's films and the store, and by extension, the way I did my previous job of buyer.” You could say that while the store is based on universal objects, it is not only dedicated to the classics, but also tries to promote the styles that emerge from them.
“The shops in Japan are at the extremes. There are a lot of copy and paste shops and in the current situation where authentic tailoring that can be dressed down is hard to find. but I feel that the original European landscape and physical experience of HEMISPHERES in Paris and TIE YOUR TIE in Florence are needed in the current scene. And we don't live in a time when you have to buy a suit from a male shopkeeper wearing a tie, except from long-established tailors.” 〈Godard Haberdashery〉 proposes the depth of dressing down, so that tailoring, which has a prestigious image, can be incorporated into everyday life. For example, by approaching a black tuxedo jacket without the silk satin trim at the neck, Godard Haberdashery's approach to tailoring is to develop it into a proposal for everyday wear.
With such an abundance of clothing and related information, it is easy to become unintentionally bound by categories and genres and forget that fashion is free. The clothing you will find at 〈Godard Haberdashery〉 is filled with items that will inspire you to expand the scope of your own style. "I think it's good to just enjoy everything.” As Sasako says, even if you have never had the opportunity or feel intimidated by the word “tailoring,” you should visit 〈Godard Haberdashery〉 as a place that reminds you of the feeling of enjoying fashion rather than being bound by the word “tailoring”.
