I saw Borough Council July 2025.
I asked them later about the set and half the music they played were WIP ideas.
I went online after to find more of their music and could only find 3 tracks.
The only access I could get to their world was through their Resonance FM shows as Hard_Drive.
Haydn, Jo and Tom’s approach towards music itself is something I’ve been intrigued by..I think it’s the sound of three people who’ve known each other since birth and school. That’s something that can’t be replicated and it shows in the music.

I reached out and we had a pint to catch up. The photos are taken at Haydn + Jo’s spot where they live and rehearse.

Haydn、Jo、Tom

How did you first meet?

Jo I met Hayden when I was Zero years old because we're siblings. Haydn taught me the letter B on the keyboard in our dad and stepmom's house in Worthing in the attic.

Haydn There was a really great video of me and Jo playing Wonderwall when we were kids on the bunkbeds.

Jo I don't remember that

Haydn Yeah, because that's when our dad always tried to teach us piano. We always used to run away. I remember, like, mum would come in with the comics, and I'd run away behind the sofa. I learned the guitar trying to get away from classical piano.

Tom Yeah, so I met these boys after moving from Wales. I met Haydn in primary school, always imagined playing drums, and watched drummers on TV, music ads and thought, I think I can do that.

that. I remember sitting down at a friend's house, Zach Jarvis, and he had a drum kit in his bedroom. I remember just going at it and thinking like, Oh, no, fuck…

What were your early years like as a band?

Tom It was, especially in the practice rooms at school. Like every single lunch break, pretty much, we’d just blast thru tunes.

Haydn We'd open the window and cramp the amps up. We loved it that, you could hear us where everyone was eating their lunch. We did it basically so we could skip class. We were like quite shy kids. Like while the others we were out, we were the music kids. I remember playing in Tom’s house, because the park was opposite, we'd like open your window, yeah.

Tom We called it the ‘treehouse’.

Tom We were like 13, Jo wasn’t part of it at the start you know.

Jo I was social pariah. I’m two years younger than Hayden so yeah, 11 in year 7. That's how you're how old you are in year 7, isn't it? 11. Yeah..

I mean, I played classical piano for like five grades, but I stopped doing it because I just couldn't get my head around the theory. And then when we became a three-piece, someone-but someone has to play bass.

How does Hastings play into this?

Tom Yeah we all grew up in Hastings. There’s a strong pub culture there but they all love music and art. Even though we played like kind of, you know broken DIY boxes for no pay, we always seem to have shows once we started.

Haydn Maybe there's something in the freedom of everyone's like fight. Every everyone wanted to be in a band. I feel like there was a lot of our friends wanted to be in a band.

Why 3 songs?

Haydn I think that we have shot ourselves in the foot by not adhering to the usual ways of doing things. But I don't. I feel like is was a way. Empowerment is the word.

Jo I think we're a dysfunctional unit.

Tom そこを「Treehouse(ツリーハウス)」って呼んでた。

Hastings

“Empowerment(自分たち自身で力を持つこと)”っていう言葉が近いかな。

Haydn Maybe because of the time spent together, it's been so long. There's been so much behind us and so many versions of us to kind of like represent it.

Tom It was and still is always very undetermined.

Haydn The best way to make a band like the the longevity in a band is just going with what is happening in the moment. So I think especially with this upcoming record, it's like you know, what have you written? Let's just work it out. Let's play it. It will always sound cohesive because like we're the same people. So it's not like you know it's not a compilation ever because when it's being like filtered through our individual brains will always sound like us three as individuals.

What is about Resonance FM?

Haydn It's just so artist focused, which is rare. I think it’s a way of us releasing music we were working on slash like things that were finished that we thought were more strong at the time we like letting people dig for it a little bit more.

Jo I feel like it gave us an opportunity to put music out without all of the fear and paralysis that normally comes from all the preparation of putting out music.

Resonance FM

In general it feels like you guys have shy’ed away from streaming platforms.

Tom We got an uplift in listens on prescribed when we put it up on Spotify, which was alright.

Jo Yeah, but also that was as a result of the algorithms pushing the song, essentially. It's not for any real reason than that song got big. I mean, I think it's a good song, but it's algorithms pushing it at the end of the day.

Tom We grew up with streaming and the internet. As intuitive musicians being hyper exposed to so many genres. Personally I felt like I was being forced to assume the forms of what I was listening to.

Key influences.

Jo Over the past five, six years, I would say the biggest one's probably J Dilla. In terms of bands maybe Broadcast and Women. In terms of actual influence, yeah,

Tom Some of my biggest influences are Kruder and Dorfmeister. Huge fan of their choice of breakbeats. I'm a huge fan of Jeff Kropp from Hum. He's a fantastic drummer. Joe Easley from Dismemberment Plan. A little bit more technical drum-wise. Love his sort of baggy but tight kind of busyness.

Haydn To be honest I only listen to The Beatles now. I never listen to any other music. I listen to the studio outtakes. I’m sure some were bootlegged in the 80s, which is like all of the session tapes of them getting to the point of an end song. So if it's You Won't See Me on Rubber Soul, it was them rehearsing it, practicing. I listened to that on the train to go to see my girlfriend Rosie. I listened to the whole thing and it's basically listening to the same song like six times. I’m completely obsessed to the degree of mental illness.

The Dismemberment PlanのJoe Easleyも好き。

The gig experience.

Jo I hate being in the limelight. We played in Nantes. Turns out the amp wasn’t on but it’s the one I enjoyed the most. It’s testament to just feeling it out.

Tom In terms of the experience in general, I feel we've connected with our audience at our shows selling actual music like CDs. We met people in Bedford or somewhere who are still followers, and like we've never got anything tangible from streaming. It's just hype.

Haydn Yeah, we’ve had complicated times because essentially we're a very fragile band. It’s my best friend from 10 and you're my brother.

I've had conversations with friends in bands who’ve asked me how's it going with you guys? I said oh, it can be fragile, and they've just been like, oof. I'm like, no. That’s our good place.
